Purpose: To assess dose and treatment period of the antibiotic florfenicol on the gut health of Atlantic salmon, focussing on gut health and antibiotic resistance of the microbiome.

Distress: The trial will consist of three different doses of florfenicol of differring treatment lengths. The treatments will be given to healthy fish and the distress level is expected to be minimal to the overall health of the fish.

Expected benefit: It is not fully understood how antibiotics such as florfenicol disrupt the intestinal homoeostasis in Atlantic salmon. The current trial will help to understand the changes caused by florfenicol on the gut microbiome and related antimicrobial resistance genes in order to better understand and control against incorrect use of the antibiotic.

Number of animals, and what kind: Atlantic salmon (ca. 250g) will be graded into 24, 1M tanks with 30 fish per tank (total of 720 fish). Of these, 660 will be fed the antibiotic.

How to adhere to 3R: Alternatives to the current trial have been considered and numbers of fish have been carefully assessed in order to minimise numbers whilst not compromising scientific statistical relevance.
