The experiment aims for identification of the optimum water velocities for Atlantic salmon smolts for best training effects and welfare. The study is part of a long term research effort to optimize rearing strategies for Atlantic salmon in closed containment systems (Ctrl-Aqua). Smolts will be transferred into tanks with different water velocities and reared for three months. Individual weight and length will be recorded for each fish at the beginning of the trial and the growth and welfare scores of the fish will be monitored during the trial period.

The total number of fish in this experiment is 2400 Atlantic salmon smolts, with an estimated weight of 80g at the beginning of the trial. The fish will be separated into twelve groups (tanks), triplicate tanks of four different velocities. There is no expected mortality due to experimental condition. Fish in highest water velocities may experience mild stress.
