This study investigates the function of the neuronal activity-induced gene, Arc, in
modulation of the synaptic strength and structure in the hippocampus of the adult
rat in vivo. To understand failure of memory systems and loss of cognitive ability in neurological and neuropsychiatric disorders as well as normal aging, we aim to elucidate the underlying cellular mechanisms. The research involves use of rodent models in combination with the use of in vitro cell lines. Recordings of neuronal activity are done under normal surgical levels of anesthesia.
